How to run a clinic waiting queue without a ticket machine
Put a code at reception: patients scan it to take a number on their phone, see how many are ahead and the estimated wait, and get an alert before their turn — no ticket machine, no names called out.
The waiting-room problem
Patients don't know when their turn is, so they sit anxious and keep asking reception. Reception calls out names, which is neither pleasant nor private.
A digital queue
The idea is simple:
- A code printed at reception.
- The patient scans it and gets a number (like A12) on their phone.
- They see how many are ahead and the estimated wait.
- They get "almost your turn" two places before.
- Reception presses "Next"; the patient gets "It's your turn" and the number appears on the calling screen.
Privacy
The calling screen shows numbers only, or a first name if you prefer. Patients never have to share a phone number.
Common questions
- Does it replace appointments?
- A digital queue is for walk-ins or ordering arrivals. Appointments stay in your scheduling system.
- What if the patient leaves the clinic?
- They can step out and come back — the alert reaches their phone wherever they are.
